Not sure this _actually_ works with our dependencies, but worth a shot.
This reverts commit 2ac3e33. Because we need a wheel from re2, and because it doesn't yet publish a free-threaded wheel, we can't support free-threading yet. Ref: https://hugovk.github.io/free-threaded-wheels/
May revert.
This should fail. Did the bug seriously get fixed in 5.27?
