GitHub is a platform for source code management and collaboration on software development projects. To get started, you just need to create a personal account.

  2. Click Sign up.
  3. Enter your personal email (e.g. [email protected]) and choose a strong password.

You can also choose to continue with Continue with Google or similar options.

  4. Choose a username (this will be your public profile name, e.g. MarioRossi or MarioRossi93).
  5. Complete the verification and registration process.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email: open it and click Verify email address.

3. Organisations on GitHub

A GitHub organisation represents a working group, a company, or a research entity. Just like a user can have personal repositories, an organisation can manage shared repositories among its members.

Main characteristics

  • Each organisation has a name. In our case: cnit-rass-lab.

  • Inside it there are shared repositories (i.e. projects). These can be:

    • Public – for open projects, teaching material, challenges, or open‑source initiatives.
    • Private – for internal or confidential development activities, where GitHub is used as a development and collaboration tool.

⚠️ Warning: for projects that include sensitive data or know‑how, GitHub must not be used, not even with private repositories.

  • Users are added as members with different permission levels (Owner, Admin, Member, etc.). In our case, all members are currently Owners (to be confirmed).
