You talk:
one more; a nice feature would be expose functionality that allows the consumer to display custom tooltips and dropdowns when editing cells (including plain text, no formulas); and ideally a way to read and modify cell content in spite of a cell being edited / Excel being in busy state.

Potential use cases could be anything related to autocompletion, including intellisense features for code typed into regular Excel cells;
But I dont do that with Excelscript. You can help me???

Just stumbled on this repo (neat project!) - thought I'd offer a tip:

To create custom tool-tips and dropdowns when editing cells: The extensive work done over at https://github.com/Excel-DNA/IntelliSense might help point you in the right direction.

As for editing/modifying cells while they're being edited, that doesn't seem possible, but you could force Excel to end the edit (not officially supported, but there are a few hacks out there like invoking a recalculation), and then read and change the value immediately after.
