As a result of the new nullability annotations used in Gradle 9.0.0 an explicit non-null check is now required here.
The old plugin does not support Gradle 9.0.0.

This PR upgrades the Gradle version used by the build to 9.0.0.
All changes were explicitly required for a successful build.
