This is my attempt at bringing #139 up-to-date with respect to modern-day sumpy. As yet, I have low confidence in this merge. It passes ruff, and that's about it. That's also why I pushed it here as opposed to the original PR.
Unfortunately, this still contains merge commits, which means it'll have to be squashed at the end of it all.
