Hello! This GitHub Wiki provides a comprehensive tutorial for performing microstate analysis of resting-state EEG data in Cartool (cartoolcommunity.unige.ch) – a free, easy-to-use software that has been programmed by Denis Brunet from the Functional Brain Mapping Laboratory (FBMLab), Geneva, Switzerland, and is supported by the Center for Biomedical Imaging (CIBM) of Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland. Christoph M. Michel, PhD, is the Head of the FBMLab.

This tutorial was written by Armen Bagdasarov, a PhD student in Clinical Psychology at Duke University, and Michael Gaffrey, PhD, the Craig Yabuki Research Chair of Mental & Behavioral Health at Children’s Wisconsin. We thank Jamie Gonzalez for setting up this GitHub Wiki.

This tutorial was created to increase methodological accessibility of EEG microstate analysis. It uses resting-state EEG data recorded from 5-to-10-month-old infants. However, it is applicable to resting-state EEG data recorded from most human populations. Detailed descriptions of all analysis steps with screenshots and videos are provided, as well as tutorial EEG data that may be downloaded. Before getting started, it is recommended that you have read the following paper. And, if you use any part of this tutorial for your own work, please cite it. Thank you!

It is also recommended that you read the following papers to get acquainted with EEG microstate analysis as a neuroimaging tool:

If you have issues or questions as you work through this tutorial, please submit them to the Issues page of this GitHub. For all other needs, please contact Armen Bagdasarov at [email protected].
