Introduction

Cooperative services such as V2X are based on a mutual exchange of data between clients. In the case of V2X, the clients are road users (car, bike, pedestrian, etc.). The benefit of these services is highly dependent on the amount of connected users and the amount of data being exchanged.

In order to the drive the adaption we have developed in STEP an open platform using established standards like cellular cos (4G, 5G), MQTT and ETSI-ITS. To drive further adoption, we are proposing to move some of our developed components into an OpenSource project and develop them their further using a wider community. In the following sections we explain the main drivers and the benefits to go Open Source as well as to touch on the process and the investment needed to succeed.
