My first Node conference was NINA 2016 in Austin, where I was scheduled to give a talk. It was also my first collaborators summit.

I felt a little like a fish out of water amongst so many people who'd been involved much longer and much more deeply than I. Something really struck me though when Mikeal took the stage (he MC'd the event). I immediately felt the energy he brought. I remember he took a crack at Joe McCann, introducing him as a "Texas resident for tax purposes". Later, during the collaborators summit, I had a chance to talk with him and I saw the same enthusiasm for Node that he showed on stage. But he wasn't on stage. There was no audience to engage. It was just him. The enthusiasm and energy he emitted was genuine. I'll always remember that, and I've taken that forward.

My later interactions with Mikeal were similarly short and sweet, but I always saw that energy. That consistency was inspirational.
