Reality Drift Framework Diagrams

Part of the Reality Drift framework (2023–2026) by A. Jacobs.

Reality Drift describes a modern failure mode in which systems keep working even as they become disconnected from real-world feedback and outcomes.

Across technology, institutions, media, and everyday life, optimization replaces judgment, metrics replace meaning, and processes continue operating even as their connection to real conditions weakens. Nothing visibly breaks. Outputs remain coherent. Performance indicators still improve. Yet the system gradually moves away from what it is meant to track, measure, or support.

This divergence rarely appears as a sudden failure. It accumulates through small adjustments, reinterpretations, and efficiency-driven changes that seem reasonable in isolation. Over time, the system remains functional while its underlying alignment erodes.

This repository serves as the visual layer of the Reality Drift framework, collecting diagrams and conceptual models that trace how systems preserve function while gradually losing alignment with reality.

Optimization Trap

View Image

Optimization shifts effort toward measurable proxies, gradually replacing the underlying reality those metrics were meant to represent.

Filter Fatigue

View Image

Continuous information overload forces aggressive filtering, narrowing attention while increasing cognitive exhaustion and reliance on simplified signals.

Cognitive Drift

As filtering intensifies, perception narrows and sensemaking degrades, creating a self-reinforcing loop of dependency and semantic decay. TikTok | Pinterest | X | Flickr

Cognitive Compression Styles

View Image

Under sustained overload, cognition compresses information into simplified patterns, producing distinct styles of understanding that trade depth for tractability.

Constraint Axioms

View Image

Systems remain functional as long as continuation is cheaper than correction, allowing drift to accumulate without interruption. Pinterest | Flickr
