User Guide
First we need to retrieve the picture/photo of the receipt.
Click on the Camera icon to take a picture of the receipt. or
Click on the Gallery icon to select a picture of the receipt
If you have chosen not to display the Welcome screen, you will be directed to your default choice automatically. If you want to use the other method to get the picture of receipt, press BACK and you can click on the icon on the top right of the screen for other method.
The Receipt will be gray scaled to give a better indication of what the OCR will detect.
Press on the receipt, and the crop and rotate icons will be available to manipulate the receipt image.
Crop the image to the relevant information, i.e. Qty, Items and Prices; Sub-Total, GST, SVC and Total. Some lines that end in dates may cause confusion to the OCR(Optical Character Recognition) and the application will consider it an amount(e.g. 01-01-15 could be interpreted as $1.15). Best to get rid of them.
Make sure that the image of the receipt is right side up. Use the Rotate left and Rotate right buttons to make your receipt right side up.
Give the image a good contrast will make the outcome more accurate. Try to make the text have sharp edges yet no missing parts of text.
Split Bill Lah comes with a custom algorithm to gather information based on the shade of your receipt's text. By adjusting the shade, we can ignore the random colours and shadows that may occur on a photo.
Once the quality of the image is satisfactory, just click 'Next', and let the magic happen.
There are three ways we can split the bill. The default option is Dutch. The default can be changed from the Settings menu.
- Dutch - Select each item and it's amount by person
- Treat - Select which item to split evenly + each item and amount by person
- Share - Split the total amount evenly to everyone
Following from Treat option, there is two ways we can split the rest of the bill. Dutch or Share. The default is Dutch. But there is also the option to Calculate one portion of the treat amount as Dutch, and the rest as Share. Play around with the different options, and you will quickly get the hang of it.
The Done button will automatically select the remaining items and calculate the amount according to the selected split bill type.
