A Modular Roadmap

Breaking the system into modules (described as Milestones in the graphics below) allows the Forest Service to see results quickly, reduces risk on each module, and delivers a service that meets the needs of users.

Completed Milestones: 1) Middle Layer API that handles communication between the development site and Forest Service backend systems; 2) Intake module for Special Use permits - design and development for single-forest pilot; 3) Christmas Tree module - design and development for four-forest pilot

Planned Milestones: 4) Put Special Use permits module into production with single pilot forest; 5) Put Christmas Tree permits module into production with four pilot forests; 6) Special Uses scale-up - build out infrastructure to support onboarding of additional forests

This Modules deck includes a set of possible modules to follow the planned milestones. The Forest Service will consider the best strategy for additional scaling, weighing the distinct benefits, costs, and dependencies represented by each dimension of scaling.

Dimensions of Scaling

Dimensions of Scaling: More features modules; More forests; More permit types

Dimensions of Scaling in action:

  • The Christmas Trees module is an example of prioritizing the "More permit types" dimension
  • The Special Use Scale-up is an example of prioritizing the "More forests" dimension
  • The Modules deck primarily focuses on the “More features” dimension (and a bit of “More permit types”)
